A comparative study on the effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplates incorporated for improved thermal conductivity and dielectric properties of polyvinyl chloride

In the present work, the improvement in the thermal conductivity and dielectric behavior in the frequency range of 0.025–5 MHz of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films incorporated with graphene nanoplates (GNs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. The neat PVC and PVC composites consisting of different filler ratios of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 wt% were synthesized using the casting technique. The increase in the concentration of GNs or CNTs up to 0.75 wt% enhanced the dielectric constant, ac conductivity, q-factor, F-factor, thermal conductivity, and total impedance of PVC composites. The values of the investigated parameters are slightly higher for PVC-CNTs composites compared to PVC-GNs composites. A further increase in concentration to 1 wt% reduces these parameters, but still more than PVC consisting of 0.5 wt% fillers. The mechanism of correlated barrier hopping (CBH) could be successfully used to describe the AC electrical conductivity of both PVC-GNs and PVC-CNTs composites thin films. Furthermore, the glass transition and decomposition temperatures were determined and found to be dependent on the filler ratio and type, and the thermal stability was increased after adding the GNs or CNTs nanofillers. These findings have drawn special attention to developing PVC composites that can be used in various industrial fields including flexible and wearable technologies, power devices, supercapacitors, electric vehicle battery systems, and aerospace components.

Self-sensing cementitious geocomposites in rail track substructures

A self-sensing cementitious geocomposite was developed based on laboratory data, and it demonstrated good physical and mechanical properties, durability, and piezoresistivity performance. It consisted of stabilized cemented sand containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) as conductive fillers. This geocomposite could be used to detect damage based on the relationship between electrical impedance and mechanical performance, making it suitable for use as structural layers in railway lines. In this study, the effects of MWCNTs and GNPs, as well as of degree of saturation, were evaluated on the compaction, secant modulus, resilient modulus, electrical resistance, and piezoresistivity of the geocomposite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microscopic imaging were used to analyse microstructural alterations induced by varying concentrations of MWCNTs and GNPs. This innovative geocomposite, intended for installation in Portuguese railway lines as part of the EU project IN2TRACK3, is aimed at capturing performance data, identifying structural damage levels, and estimating load intensity, axle numbers, and train speed. The feasibility of its use is discussed based on literature studies and research conducted under the IN2TRACK2 and IN2TRACK3 projects, and its potential advantages over traditional methods for monitoring rail track health are highlighted.

Effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes and surfactants characteristics on immobilization of heavy metals in contaminated soils

Soil is a vital resource to humans and soil health is a concern of modern societies. One of the problems is the existence of heavy metals (HMs) pollution, which can affect food, water sources and biodiversity. This experimental work studies the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and surfactants characteristics on HMs immobilization in a contaminated soil. The testing program comprises the characterization of the MWCNTs and surfactants, followed by two distinct adsorption tests: suspension tests designed to supply preliminary information regarding the adsorption capacity of soil particles towards the different HMs, and percolation tests to evaluate the HMs immobilization in conditions mimicking a real in-situ scenario. The different HMs exhibit different affinities order to the soil studied: Pb > Cu > Ni > Zn. Results indicated that the inherent soil particles can immobilize significant quantities of HMs (especially Pb and Cu) due to their fine size and the existence of a substantial amount of organic matter content in the soil matrix. Molecular weight and charge density of the surfactant are characteristics with an impact on the MWCNTs dispersion and also on the adsorption capacity of the different HMs, namely in the case of Ni2+ and even in the case of Zn2+ possessing lower electronegativity and higher mobility. The findings of the study allow concluding that MWCNTs possess the potential to reduce the mobility of heavy metals in soil, even when employed at very low concentration (0.01% w/w), which is an important feature considering their cost.

Fabrication of porous and defect-rich BiOI/MWCNTs photocatalyst by Ar plasma-etching for emerging pollutants degradation

Carbon material modification and defect engineering are indispensable for bolstering the photocatalytic effectiveness of bismuth halide oxide (BiOX). In this study, a novel porous and defect-rich Ar-CB-2 photocatalyst was synthesized for emerging pollutants degradation. Leveraging the interfacial coupling effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), we expanded the absorption spectrum of BiOI nanosheets and significantly suppressed the recombination of charge carriers. Introducing defects via Argon (Ar) plasma-etching further bolstered the adsorption efficacy and electron transfer properties of photocatalyst. In comparison to the pristine BiOI and CB-2, the Ar-CB-2 photocatalyst demonstrated superior photodegradation efficiency, with the first-order reaction rates for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) and bisphenol A (BPA) increasing by 2.83 and 4.53 times, respectively. Further probe experiments revealed that the steady-state concentrations of ·O2- and 1O2 in the Ar-CB-2/light system were enhanced by a factor of 1.67 and 1.28 compared to CB-2/light system. This result confirmed that the porous and defect-rich structure of Ar-CB-2 inhibited electron-hole recombination and boosted photocatalyst-oxygen interaction, swiftly transforming O2 into active oxygen species, thus accelerating their production. Furthermore, the possible degradation pathways for tetracycline and bisphenol A in the Ar-CB-2/light system were predicted. Overall, these findings offered a groundbreaking approach to the development of highly effective photocatalysts, capable of swiftly breaking down emerging pollutants.

Efficient electromagnetic interference shielding performance of poly(amide imide)/MWCNT‐based nanocomposites

AbstractThe establishment of conducting network in a polymer matrix is essential for the improvement in electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. Here, we report the fabrication of nanocomposites comprising polyamideimide and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (from 0.5 to 5.0 wt%). The effect of MWCNTs on electrical conductivity, morphology, and EMI shielding behavior has been examined. The morphology of nanocomposites was investigated by scanning electron microscope and x‐ray diffraction, which confirms the uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in the matrix. The electrical conductivity increases from 1.4 × 10−12 to 0.145 × 10−4 S/cm by the inclusion of MWCNTs. The composite PACNT‐5 exhibits a good EMI shielding efficiency of −17 dB in the X‐band region by employing only 5.0 wt% of MWCNTs. The incorporation of MWCNTs formed an interconnected conducting network, which boost the transferability of electrons or charge carriers. This work demonstrates a feasible, simple, and effective strategy for the fabrication of potential PAI/MWCNT composites for highly efficient EMI shielding materials.

Effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on microstructure transformation of water before carbon dioxide hydrate formation

There is no consensus on the micro mechanism of gas hydrate formation. The essence of water conversion into hydrates is the transformation of disorderly arranged water into the water with specific structure under a certain condition. This study used different multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as solid promoters for gas hydrate formation. By comparing the effects of nanotubes modified with hydroxyl, carboxyl and amidogen on the microstructure transformation of water before CO2 hydrate formation, the micro mechanism and influence rules of gas hydrate formation were systematically study. The results indicated that the conversion of water to hydrates mainly manifested as the mutual conversion of strong/weak hydrogen bonding water. Due to the Brownian motion and dispersion of MWCNTs, the hydrogen bonds of the weak hydrogen-bonded water weakened (the corresponding peak blue shifts), and the distance between water molecules (dO−O) expanded, forming relatively loose hydrate, which was conducive to gas diffusion in the solid hydrate phase and increased the final gas consumption. Meanwhile, the strengthening of strong hydrogen bonded water increased the rate of hydrate formation.

Low percolation threshold polyvinylidene fluoride/multi‐walled carbon nanotube composites: A perspective of electrical conductivity, crystalline, rheological and mechanical properties

AbstractRecently, conductive polymer‐based composites (CPC) have gained considerable interest for their outstanding processing, mechanical, electrical properties, and resistance tunability. Multi‐walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was introduced into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the conductive filler via means of melt blending in this work. Effects of MWCNT on crystalline structure, thermodynamic behavior, electrical conductivity, processing and mechanical properties of PVDF/MWCNT were under investigation. By measuring the volume resistivity of PVDF/MWCNT, it was observed to have declined from 1.54 × 1012 to 3.71 × 101 Ω∙m with the MWCNT content changed from 0.7 to 1 vol%, which plummeted by 11 orders of magnitude. Therefore, it can be inferred that the percolation threshold of MWCNT lies within the range of 0.7–1 vol%. Additionally, the percolation threshold is obtained as 0.81 vol% by fitting using the percolation theory equation. Around the percolation threshold, PVDF/MWCNT composites exhibit negligible alterations in their rheological properties when contrasted with pure PVDF, yet their mechanical properties are improved. Furthermore, MWCNT does not substantially impact the crystalline structure and thermodynamic behavior of PVDF/MWCNT.Highlights The percolation threshold of MWCNT in PVDF is 0.81 vol%. The volume resistivity of the 1 vol% MWCNT sample was only 3.71 Ω∙m. 1 vol% MWCNT exhibit favorable rheological and mechanical properties.

Investigating the quantum size effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in photocatalytic fermentative biohydrogen production

Nanocatalysts' quantum size impacts their catalytic activity, hence surface area in nanomaterials plays a key role in controlling the charge transferring. Since multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) possess a large surface area as compared to bulk activated carbon (AC), thus their role in photo fermentative biohydrogen production (PFHP) from corn stover has been investigated. The physio-optical characteristics of the studied MWCNTs, and AC were characterized through the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The experimental finding revealed that MWCNTs has a larger specific surface area (SSA) of 227.69 m2/g than activated carbon (AC) (126.26 m2/g). SEM and Raman results confirmed that MWCNTs have smaller sizes and more defects due to surface dangling bonds. The incorporation of MWCNTs in a photo fermentative medium showed a pronounced effect on hydrogen production. The optimal concentration of 20 mg/L MWCNTs increased the hydrogen production rate to 132.96 mL/h, 46.66% and 17.85% greater than the control group (CG) and AC, respectively, and reduced the lag period by 12 h. At 20 mg/L loading concentration, total hydrogen production was 293.84 mL, 2-fold and 16.24% greater than CG. The 44.85%, 100.39%, and 126.49% increase in byproducts, energy conversion efficiency (ECE), and light conversion efficiency (LCE), respectively compared to CG indicated an increase in metabolic processes, which increased total hydrogen production, suggesting that catalyst surface area is the key parameter affecting fermentative biohydrogen production catalytic efficiency.

Effects of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Recycled Fine Aggregates on the Multi-Generational Cycle Properties of Reactive Powder Concrete

In order to investigate the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the recyclable properties of multi-generation recycled concrete, the physical properties of multi-generation recycled fine aggregate and the mechanical properties of multi-generation recycled concrete with different dosages of MWCNTs were tested, and the enhancement mechanism was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the apparent density of multi-generation recycled fine aggregate with 0.05 wt% MWCNTs was increased by 1.04~2.03%, the crushing value was decreased by 38.21~49.45%, the compressive strength of the concrete prepared by it was increased by 11.11~18.96%, the splitting tensile strength was increased by 10~43.94%, the flexural strength was increased by 13.62~22.23%, and the mechanical properties were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Combined with the scanning electron microscope image analysis, the MWCNTs can fill the pores inside the specimen, bridge the cracks, and retard the decrease in concrete strength after multi-generation recycling.

Effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on gene and microRNA expression in human hepatocarcinoma HepG2 cells

The usage of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has increased exponentially in the past years, but, potential toxicity mechanisms are not clear. We studied the transcriptomic alterations induced by one multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and its –OH and –COOH functionalized derivatives in human HepG2 cells. We showed that all three MWCNT treatments induced alterations in stress-related signaling pathways, inflammation-related signaling pathways, cholesterol synthesis pathways, proliferation-related pathways, senescence-related pathways and cancer-related pathways. In stress-related pathways, the acute phase response was induced in all three MWCNTs and all doses treated and ranked high. Other stress-related pathways were also related to the oxidative-induced signaling pathways, such as NRF-2 mediated oxidative stress response, hepatic fibrosis/Stella cell activation, iNOS signaling, and Hif1α signaling. Many inflammationrelated pathways were altered, such as IL-8, IL-6, TNFR1, TNFR2, and NF-κB signaling pathways. These results were consistent with our previous results with exposures to the same three multi-walled carbon nanotubes in human lung BEAS-2B and also with results in mice and rats. From the microRNA target filter analysis, TXNIP & miR-128-3p interaction was present in all three MWCNT treatments, and maybe important for the induction of oxidative stress. CXCL-8 & miR-146-5p and Wee1 & miR-128-3p were only present in the cells treated with the parent and the OH-functionalized MWCNTs. These mRNA-miRNA interactions were involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, cell cycle, cholesterol biosynthesis and cancer related pathways. Target filter analysis also showed altered liver hyperplasia/hyperproliferation and hepatic cancer pathways. In short, target filter analysis complemented the transcriptomic analysis and pointed to specific gene/microRNA interactions that can help inform mechanism of action. Moreover, our study showed that the signaling pathways altered in HepG2 cells correlated well with the toxicity and carcinogenicity observed in vivo, indicating that HepG2 may be a good in vitro predictive model for MWCNT toxicity studies.

Force attenuation performance in sandwich structures with STF and M-STF encapsulation

In this study, we investigate the role of adding shear thickening fluids (STFs) and multi-functional shear thickening fluids (M-STFs) to the core of a sandwich-structured composite made of aluminum facesheets and XPS foam cores with different geometries on force attenuation performance. Six different core designs were machined, and all designs had the same space for adding STFs and M-STFs. STF with 40 wt% SiO2 in PEG 400 was selected and fabricated. M-STFs were made by adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) up to 1.5 wt%. The effects of MWCNTs on the rheological and electrical properties of the STF were investigated. The force attenuation tests were performed with an impact drop tower test system at three different heights with 5, 10, and 15 J energy levels. According to the results, V6_STF (with 16 holes with a diameter of 6 mm) and H6_STF (with 16 rectangular cubic column with cross-sections of 6 × 6 mm) designed sandwich structures showed better performance in terms of force attenuation compared with the other samples. Next, these two sandwich structures were filled again with M-STF (0.5 wt% MWCNT), and the force attenuation performance of the structures showed an improvement further, and the H6_STF_CNT sample improved by 24.8% compared to the clean sandwich structure sample. These results demonstrate the potential of STFs and M-STFs in strengthening the force attenuation performance of sandwich structures with XPS foam cores, mainly when used with appropriate core geometry.

Effects of MWCNT and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) contents on the electrical conductivity and sensor properties of thermoplastic polyurethane nanosurfaces

Recently, strain sensors have significant areas of usage with their strain, stretching and wearable features for various applications such as personal health monitoring, joint movement detection, robotics, etc. To achieve this, various studies are conducted to optimize the production of MWCNT-based nanocomposites. In the present study, a total of 12 solutions were formulated by introducing Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) at different concentrations and ratios into the Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) solution, and then nanocomposite surfaces were produced from these solutions through an electrospinning process. These samples were subjected to resistance changes due to elongation, gauge factor changes due to elongation to evaluate the sensor property and cycle tests to evaluate the sustainability of the sensor feature. According to the results, the best sensor properties were obtained in the samples with SDS added at a rate of 1/20 (MWCNT:SDS) for 0.3 MWCNT and 0.5 MWCNT; on the other hand 1/26 weight ratio of MWCNT:SDS for 0.7 MWCNT.

The effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on mechanical properties and water adsorption of lightweight foamed concrete

The paper investigates the impact of carbon nanotube-based modifiers on the performance characteristics of lightweight foamed concrete (LFC). The method involves saturating quartz sand with a solution containing a catalyst for carbon nanotube (CNT) growth, followed by the subsequent chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis of CNTs. Evaluation of nanomodified sand samples was conducted using SEM and TEM, thermogravimetry, Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. Compression and flexural strength tests of (LFC) specimens indicated that the optimal proportion of nanomodified sand introduced is 1% by weight with a particle size of 0.16 mm. This resulted in a notable 35% increase in compressive strength and an approximately 32% improved in flexural strength. Furthermore, the modified sample with CNT-based sand exhibited a 27% reduction in water absorption. The paper also presents a potential mechanism to explain the impact of carbon nanotube-based modified sand on the evolving structure of (LFC).

Study of the Effect of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Mechanical Properties of Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/Polyaniline Blend Film

In this research, poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyaniline blend films were fabricated using solution casting technique with different weight ratios of PANI (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) wt.%. The results showed that the best ratio of the polymer blend was (92% PVA/8% PANI), based on the electrical conductivity of direct current. The results showed that 8 wt.% PANI possessed the highest conductivity. Then, the composite films were prepared by adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to the optimum ratio of the polymer blend as a base material and at different weight ratios (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 wt.%). A tension device was used to examine and characterize the prepared samples. It was found that the addition of MWCNT to PVA/PANI caused an obvious decrease in elongation while there was an increase in tension strength and “Young’s modulus”. Optical microscopy results showed a good picture of the distribution of MWCNT particles for composites up to 1 wt.% MWCNT. But, some aggregations can be observed in films with 3, 5, and 7 wt.% MWCNT content.

Structure-Function Studies of Glucose Oxidase in the Presence of Carbon Nanotubes and Bio-Graphene for the Development of Electrochemical Glucose Biosensors.

In this work, we investigated the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and bio-graphene (bG) on the structure and activity of glucose oxidase (GOx), as well as on the performance of the respective electrochemical glucose biosensors. Various spectroscopic techniques were applied to evaluate conformational changes in GOx molecules induced by the presence of MWCNTs and bG. The results showed that MWCNTs induced changes in the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) prosthetic group of GOx, and the tryptophan residues were exposed to a more hydrophobic environment. Moreover, MWCNTs caused protein unfolding and conversion of α-helix to β-sheet structure, whereas bG did not affect the secondary and tertiary structure of GOx. The effect of the structural changes was mirrored by a decrease in the activity of GOx (7%) in the presence of MWCNTs, whereas the enzyme preserved its activity in the presence of bG. The beneficial properties of bG over MWCNTs on GOx activity were further supported by electrochemical data at two glucose biosensors based on GOx entrapped in chitosan gel in the presence of bG or MWCNTs. bG-based biosensors exhibited a 1.33-fold increased sensitivity and improved reproducibility for determining glucose over the sweat-relevant concentration range of glucose.

Study on the Properties of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs)/Polypropylene Fiber (PP Fiber) Cement-Based Materials.

In order to improve the mechanical properties and durability of cement-based materials, a certain amount of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polypropylene fiber (PP fiber) were incorporated into cement-based materials. The mechanical properties of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polypropylene fiber cement-based materials were evaluated using flexural strength tests, compressive strength tests, and splitting tensile tests. The effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polypropylene fiber on the durability of cement-based materials were studied using drying shrinkage tests and freeze-thaw cycle tests. The effects of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polypropylene fibers on the microstructure and pore structure of the cement-based materials were compared and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion tests. The results showed that the mechanical properties and durability of cement-based materials can be significantly improved when the content of multi-walled carbon nanotubes is 0.1-0.15%. The compressive strength can be increased by 9.5% and the mass loss rate is reduced by 27.9%. Polypropylene fiber has little effect on the compressive strength of the cement-based materials, but it significantly enhances the toughness of the cement-based materials. When its content is 0.2-0.3%, it has the best effect on improving the mechanical properties and durability of the cement-based materials. The flexural strength is increased by 19.1%, and the dry shrinkage rate and water loss rate are reduced by 14.3% and 16.1%, respectively. The three-dimensional network structure formed by the polypropylene fiber in the composite material plays a role in toughening and cracking resistance, but it has a certain negative impact on the pore structure of the composite material. The incorporation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes can improve the bonding performance of the polypropylene fiber and cement matrix, make up for the internal defects caused by the polypropylene fiber, and reduce the number of harmful holes and multiple harmful holes so that the cement-based composite material not only has a significant increase in toughness but also has a denser internal structure.

MWCNTs Alleviated saline-alkali stress by optimizing photosynthesis and sucrose metabolism in rice seedling

ABSTRACTSaline and alkali stress affects the growth and development, survival rate, and final yield of rice, while new nano materials can have a positive effect on rice growth. In order to investing the effects of carboxymethyl multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the growth and development of rice seedlings under salt alkali stress, rice seedlings were cultured using rice variety “Songjing 3” using nutrient solution water culture method. The effects of MWCNTs on water absorption capacity, leaf photosynthesis, and sucrose metabolism of rice seedlings under 50 mmol/L saline-alkali stress (1NaCl: 9Na2SO4: 9NaHCO3: 1Na2CO3) conditions were investigated. The results showed that MWCNTs can improve the water use ability of roots and leaves, especially the water absorption ability of roots, which provides a guarantee for the improvement of rice biomass and the enhancement of leaf photosynthetic capacity under adverse conditions. After treatment with MWCNTs, the photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (Tr) of leaves increased significantly, and the photochemical quenching value (qP), photochemical quantum efficiency value (Fv/Fm), and electron transfer rate value (ETR) of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters increased significantly, which is beneficial to the improvement of the PSII photosynthetic system. MWCNTs treatment promoted the increase of photosynthetic pigment content in leaves under salt and alkali stress, improved the ratio of Chla and Chlb parameters, increased the activities of key photosynthetic enzymes (RUBPCase and PEPCase) in leaves, increased the value of total lutein cycle pool (VAZ), and significantly enhanced the deepoxidation effect of lutein cycle (DEPS), which can effectively alleviate the stomatal and non stomatal constraints on leaf photosynthesis caused by salt and alkali stress. MWCNTs treatment significantly enhanced the activities of sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) under salt and alkali stress, and decreased the activities of soluble acid invertase (SAInv) and alkaline/neutral invertase (A/N-Inv), indicating that MWCNTs promoted sucrose synthesis while inhibiting sucrose decomposition, thereby promoting sucrose accumulation in rice leaves. This study can provide theoretical and experimental basis for the application of MWCNTs to the production of rice under salt and alkali stress, and can find a new way for rice production in saline and alkaline lands.
